Food Fight started out as a very simple idea. Our original plans remained, however, the project itself expanded past our original thoughts and hopes. The night of the big game was a huge success. Coming into the game, New Pal had collected 756 items throughout the week and Mt. Vernon had over 1,000. The New Palestine community pulled through though because New Pal ended up winning by about one hundred items. Overall, we collected close to 2,500 items to be donated to HCFP. New Pal may have won the traveling trophy for this year, but getting to donate the items was the real win. I learned that organizing an event is a never-ending process. One task leads to five more tasks that need to be done, and the cycle continues. I also learned that cans are very heavy and moving/counting them multiple times takes a lot of team effort. Louis and I are very lucky to have had such great support from our teacher, Mr. Large, and the community around us.

Our project proposal is called Feeding Hancock County or “Food Fight.” Louis and I are going to organize a food drive where NPHS and MVHS will see who can collect the most nonperishable food items. The winner will be announced at halftime during our rivalry football game, and all the donations will go to the Hancock County Food Pantry. Our first task is to get in contact with Mt. Vernon and the elementary schools, which has come with some struggle, as we can’t get ahold of the right people. The administrators and students want to help, but don’t know how. We are selling customized t-shirts to represent for the project and raise money to buy extra food. Buying a traveling trophy (a giant spoon), traveling to MVHS, creating a promotion video, and advertising around the community is also on our agenda. It was exciting to present our idea in front of administrators because it confirmed the feeling that what we are doing is very important. From our presentation, we got feedback on how to create the promotion video. We also got all of the administrators completely on board and willing to help with our project.
In creating our first project, co-founder, Louis Holbrook, and I want to bring awareness to a global problem on a community level. The Hancock County Food Pantry feeds roughly 630 families each month and receives everything strictly through donations. The holiday months are scarce in donations, so the timing is ideal that we will make up for some of the food that they aren’t going to get. We will create the first cross-school competition Food Drive between New Palestine High School and Mt. Vernon High School. The hope for this project is that the motivation that comes from the competition will incentivize the whole community to get involved in helping this cause and making our project a success.
